Buy Bonsai Trees That Are Easy To Care For
Posted in buy bonsai on 08/24/2008 11:00 pm by CharlotteFor anyone who is just starting out in bonsai, you might appreciate this list of 5 easy-care bonsai. I found it at Ezine Articles.
The article says that the best trees for beginners should be easy to care for. I completely agree, because it can be hard to master skills like wiring, root pruning, etc., and it would truly suck to have all your hard work destroyed if your bonsai tree dies!
Luckily, there are several different varieties of trees that are relatively low-maintenance:
- Cherry blossom (can you imagine how lovely the tiny blossoms would be in the spring?!)
- Azalea
- Cottoneaster
- Juniper (although I’m not quite sure that I agree with this one, because I’ve killed MANY store-bought junipers…)
- Japanese Maple
Of course, everyone should ALWAYS do some research before actually buying a bonsai tree, no matter how “easy” they are supposed to be. You will definitely have your own list of priorities. Make them an important part of your decision!

Azalea bonsai are not low maintenance — they are very sensitive to water and soil chemistry. The same is true of Japanese maples. If you want to keep storebought juniper bonsai alive, consider repotting them in a mix of 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 decomposed granite, and 1/3 agricultural pumice.

I have found that azaleas enjoy a more acidic soil environment, but that isn’t too hard to achieve. Miracle-Gro makes some stuff called Miracid that helps a lot.
Repotting storebought juniper is a very important point. As a newbie, I killed several storebought juniper because I didn’t know that repotting them into some decent soil is so important.
Thanks for dropping by!

Junipers like to be a bit on the dry side when compared to other bonsai. They also enjoy it if you can offer morning sun and afternoon shade, morning sun isn’t as intense, and junipers are normally ground hugging shrubs under the canopys of bigger trees.
